Media in court after naming joyriders

Legal action will be taken today against several media groups in connection with their coverage of a car crash which claimed the life of a taxi driver.

30-year-old Robert McGowan died when joyriders ploughed into him just over a week ago.

The Sunday World, The Star and the editor of the Gerry Ryan Show and the Evening Herald all named or showed pictures of three joyriders.

They are now to appear in the High Court to be charged with contempt of court.

It is illegal to name children involved in crime below the age of 18 in Ireland.
