Doctor shot on South Africa holiday

A doctor was seriously ill in hospital today after being shot during a holiday in South Africa.

The doctor, named locally as Richard McBride, who is believed to be from Bangor in Co Down, was at his holiday home in the Cape Town area when he was shot in the stomach by robbers on Monday night.

Friends and colleagues at the Royal Victoria Hospital in west Belfast, where Dr McBride worked, today expressed their shock at the news.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

“We will offer them any help we can give them.”
