Equality Authority considers action against Portmarnock

The Equality Authority is considering legal action against Portmarnock Golf Club.

Portmarnock Golf Club in Dublin has already come under attack from the National Women's Council for refusing to allow female members. The club is hosting the 2003 Irish Open.

Niall Crowley of the Equality Authority has said that if women aren't admitted voluntarily, then they may take legal action under the Equal Status Act.

"I think if the logic of the Equal Status Act suggests that the State will not support a club that is found to be a discriminatory and that's why the penalty is removal of the drinks licence," she said.

"I think if you follow that logic through that there shouldn't be statutory support for a club that's found to be discriminatory."
