A pipe bomb has been defused by the British army in North Belfast following an attack on a Catholic-owned home.

The device was found in the back garden of the house at Newington Street beside the interface with the loyalist Tiger's Bay.

Meanwhile police have said the shooting and beating of the 42-year old man in Strabane was the work of republicans.

Inspector Bertie Gault said it was too early to say if it was the IRA or the INLA, both of which have a stronghold in the town.

The man was shot in both legs and each arm.
