Ulster back under direct rule
Northern Ireland today entered another era of direct rule from Westminster as the British government moved to save the Good Friday Agreement by suspending devolution.
As Ulster's beleaguered peace process reeled from allegations of a republican spy ring at Stormont, Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid’s order to suspend the Assembly and power sharing executive came into effect at midnight.
