Greens: No vote will not threaten jobs

The Green party has described as absurd the suggestion that thousands of Irish jobs depend on the Nice Treaty being ratified.

The Government, however, is predicting widespread job losses if Ireland rejects the Treaty for a second time.

Speaking in Dublin in the company of AT&GWU member, Mike O'Reilly, and left wing Swedish MEP, Jonas Sjostedt, Green MEP Patricia McKenna said the Government is scare mongering voters by playing the jobs card.

She said that many aspects of the Treaty could endanger jobs with temporary loss of our veto on taxation and structural funds.

Ms McKenna pointed out that much US investment in Ireland is thanks to our lower rate of corporation tax.

She said if we vote "Yes", the pressure to raise corporation tax in line with the rest of the EU will be unavoidable.
