A baby hippopotamus at Dublin Zoo was today at the centre of an appeal to find a new companion after his mother swallowed a tennis ball and died.

Zoo keepers said they have been receiving sacks of letters expressing concern for 14-month-old Hoovie since he lost his mother Linda three weeks’ ago.
