Govt reveals details of corruption proposals

The Government has announced further details of its proposal to establish a Corruption Assets Bureau following the publication of the interim report of the Flood Tribunal yesterday.

Under the proposed new legislation, senior gardai would have the power to form an opinion based on a report from a tribunal of inquiry and the High Court would have the authority to inspect the affairs of an individual or company suspected of corruption.

The proposed Corruption Assets Bureau would also be empowered to adjust the value of assets obtained through corruption into current-day values.

The Government said that any proceeds obtained through the proposed agency would be held for the benefit of the Irish people.
