A Catholic grammar school in north Belfast has been damaged in what police say was a sectarian arson attack.

The blaze was discovered in the early hours at Dominican College in the Fortwilliam residential area of north Belfast.

The fire caused extensive damage to a storeroom and a kitchen.

The school is located in a district that up until now has remained relatively unscathed by violence.

The Mount Vernon area, regarded as a UVF stronghold, is about half a mile away from the school.

Local SDLP assemblyman, Alban Maginnis, said there was no reason for the attack, other than pure sectarian hatred.
