Two appear on assault rifle charge

Two men have appeared before a special sitting of Limerick district court charged with possession of an assault rifle at the weekend.

Ross Cantillon, aged 19 years, from the St Mary's Park area, and Roy Woodland, aged 19 years, from the Thomandgate district, both deny the charges.

Both men are charged under section 27 of the firearms act of being in possession of an AK 47 in the Moyross area of Limerick city on Friday evening last.

The men were detained and questioned at the weekend after shots were fired at a house.

Although the house was occupied at the time no one was injured.

At this morning's sitting an application for bail was made but Detective Inspector Jim Brown opposed this.

He said as far as he was aware this was the first time in the history of the state such a weapon like this had been used in a family feud.

Judge Timothy Lucy adjourned the bail hearing until next Wednesday at the same court.
