Walsh issues fans FMD warning

The Minister for Agriculture is asking Irish football supporters to be conscious of the dangers posed by foot-and-mouth disease, as hundreds try to get the cash together to travel to the next round of the World Cup in South Korea.

A number of outbreaks have been recorded on the Korean peninsula, but Minister Joe Walsh is stressing it doesn’t pose an immediate threat.

Nevertheless Sunday’s game in Suwon is just 40 kilometres from the original outbreak in South Korea which resulted in thousands of pigs being slaughtered.

A further case has been confirmed in a dairy herd, 60km south of Seoul. The Department of Agriculture has already distributed information leaflets to the thousands of fans who travelled to Japan. Similar guidelines will be issued to those travelling to South Korea.
