The Irish Cancer Society has called on the Government to remove tobacco from the Consumer Price index, a move that would allow it to increase the price of cigarettes without affecting inflation.

The call was made to mark World No Tobacco Day. The ICS believes increased prices are the most effective way to crack down on smoking, particularly among young people.

Meanwhile, European Commissioner David Byrne and Health Minister Micheal Martin have launched an anti-smoking campaign targeting young people to coincide with World No Tobacco Day and the start of the World Cup.

The ‘Feel Free to Say No’ campaign features football stars urging you people not to smoke.
