More people died from suicide last year than were killed on Ireland’s roads, according to figures released today by the Central Statistics Office.

The report on births, marriages and deaths in 2001 showed an 8.5% increase in the number of suicides, from 413 in 2000 to 448 last year. 79% of suicide victims were male and 21% female.
