It is understood that she and her friend were watching a video in her home when an intruder broke into the house and attacked the pair with a knife.
Her friend, who also sustained stab wounds but her injuries are not thought to be life threatening, raised the alarm and gardai found the victim at 11:30pm.
The student, who would have been 20 next Tuesday, was the eldest of three children; her parents are presently travelling home from England.
A 20-year-old was arrested close to the scene and is being questioned by Gardai in Togher under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
The scene of the crime has been preserved for technical examination and the State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, is to carry out a post-mortem.
