Six asylum seekers who are awaiting deportation after their applications to remain in Ireland were rejected have begun a hunger strike in Mounjoy Prison.

The four Nigerians and two Algerians are on a hunger and thirst strike since last night in protest over their treatment. The six men say that they feel that they should not be treated like criminals while they are waiting to leave Ireland.
