Alliance for 'No' Vote calls for X case legislation
The Alliance for a ‘No’ Vote has called on the Government to legislate for the X case as a matter of urgency following the defeat of Wednesday’s proposal to tighten abortion laws.
The ANV believes legislation allowing suicidal women to procure abortions in Ireland could be drawn up before the current Dail is dissolved.
It also poured scorn on the Taoiseach’s claims that the ‘no’ vote would lead to the introduction of a liberal abortion regime in Ireland.
"The primary motivation I think driving the ‘no’ vote and driving the ‘no’ victory was the desire to see the X case remain law and the desire not to see the X case rolled back," spokesperson Ivana Bacik said.
"The people have spoken now twice and they have spoken against rolling back the X case and there is a clear mandate now to the Government to legislate, to give full effect to the X case test."
