15c plastic bag tax comes into effect

The Government’s 15 cent tax on plastic bags comes into effect today, with retailers obliged to charge the levy on each plastic bag given out to customers.

The proceeds from the tax will go into an environmental fund and, according to the Government, will be used to pay for waste management schemes throughout Ireland.
