Noonan calls for Attorney General's resignation
Opposition leader Michael Noonan has called on the Attorney General, Michael McDowell, to step down from his post in light of his new role with the Progressive Democrats.
The Fine Gael leader said: "The functions of the Attorney General are not compatible with Michael McDowell's role with the PDs."
"As president of the PD's he is involved in devising their political strategy, formulating and advocating policy and advising on the selection of candidates.
"As a candidate in Dublin South East he is actively involved in electioneering. The public are confused as to whether he is speaking as Attorney General, as President of the PDs or as an election candidate.
Mr Noonan continued: "The Office of Attorney General is a full time job without taking on the burden of party political responsibilities.
"The current Attorney General has already shown his flawed judgement in his advice to the Government on the abortion referendum and on the legislation which underpins it.
"It is time Mr McDowell decided to fish or cut bait. He cannot exercise his legal and constitutional functions in a manner which does not bring party political considerations into his advice to the Government."
