Commons meeting for Omagh relatives

Relatives of the Omagh bomb victims were meeting shadow Northern Ireland secretary Quentin Davies in the House of Commons today.

Ahead of the meeting, Mr Davies said he wanted to encourage the relatives in their plan to launch a civil action against suspects in the August 1998 Real IRA atrocity, which killed 29 people.

"As well as offering sympathy to the families, I shall be wishing them every success with their civil case as well as calling on Sinn Fein to stop its policy of non-cooperation with the on-going police investigations,’’ said Mr Davies.

Some of the relatives of the victims are planning a High Court action against suspects who have yet to be brought to trial.

Last week, businessman Colm Murphy was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment at a Special Criminal Court in Dublin for conspiring to cause the bombing.

He is the only person prosecuted over the outrage to date, and the relatives’ compensation action is aimed at other known suspects, against whom police have been unable to secure sufficient evidence to mount a prosecution.
