Metro system gets go-ahead

The cabinet is believed to have approved the construction of a metro system connecting Dublin Airport to the city centre.

The cabinet is believed to have approved the construction of a metro system connecting Dublin Airport to the city centre.

The €2.5bn project, which the Government hopes to fund through private investment, is also expected to link up with the LUAS tram network, which is currently under construction.

Public Enterprise Minister Mary O’Rourke is expected to announce the approval for the metro system shortly.

Meanwhile, as part of its public transport policy, the Government is also expected to examine the possibility of re-opening disused railway lines.
