The Bank of Ireland has been criticised by the Consumer Association for its handling of changing Irish punts to euro.

The Bank of Ireland is asking people who want to change money from Irish punts and coins into euro to supply their name and a contact telephone number.

However, the Consumer Association is concerned about who may have access to that information, how long it will be held and when it will be destroyed.

The watchdog has received complaints about the bank’s procedure.

All banks, irrespective of whether or not you are a customer, will change punts into euro free of charge for the duration of the changeover period and a short time afterwards, say the Euro Changeover Board of Ireland.
