Ahern hopes for new year upturn

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern today sounded a note of caution for the country’s economy in the year ahead.

But he said the republic, dubbed the ‘‘Celtic tiger’’ because of its booming economy in recent years, was in a strong position to benefit from any improvement in global economic fortunes.

In his New Year message he highlighted Ireland’s economic performance of the past few years, declaring it ‘‘the envy of more than just our EU partners’’.

But he said: ‘‘While we enjoyed unprecedented growth, we have not been immune to the slowdown in the global economy.

‘‘We are in a period of economic uncertainty, but we enter 2002 in a very strong position, and we will be well-placed to take advantage of the predicted upturn.’’

Mr Ahern said the past year had been difficult for many people, with unprecedented events both nationally and internationally, but by working together, everyone could be proud of their efforts to respond.

‘‘The attacks of September 11 were truly an assault on democracy and the freedom we enjoy. Even now, it is difficult to comprehend the scale of the destruction and loss of innocent life. Our thoughts remain with the victims, their families and friends.’’

Mr Ahern hailed the advent of the euro currency in the republic and across much of Europe as ‘‘a great achievement for the 12 European Union states participating’’.

In another New Year move, Mr Ahern responded to a World Day of Peace message from the Pope.

He said Ireland faced new challenges and responsibilities because of the country’s new-found prosperity.

‘‘The message from His Holiness reminds us that the dignity and rights of individuals should be our guiding principle when coping with these challenges and dealing with our responsibilities.’’
