Pope gives honour to Galway nun

A nun, born in Galway, who worked on behalf of Irish prisoners in Britain, has been rewarded for her contribution to peace and justice.

A nun, born in Galway, who worked on behalf of Irish prisoners in Britain, has been rewarded for her contribution to peace and justice.

The Pope has confirmed the high honour of the 'Cross for Church and Pontiff' on Sister Sarah Clarke.

She worked closely from 1973 to 1999 with relatives of Irish prisoners in Britain.

Sister Sarah also carried out foundational work which helped secure the release of the Birmingham six and the Guildford four.

The Pope has conferred the honour at the request of the Archbishop of Armagh and the Primate of All Ireland, Dr Sean Brady.
