Labour publishes Garda Ombudsman Bill

The Labour Party has published a new bill calling for the establishment of an independent ombudsman to oversee complaints against the Gardai.

Party spokesman Brendan Howlin said the conduct of certain Gardai in Donegal and the recent Abbeylara fiasco suggests the time is right for a change in the complaints procedure.

He said Gardai must be more accountable to the public when their actions are called into question.
