Aer Lingus remains tight-lipped after board meeting

Aer Lingus has declined to reveal details of its plans for the near future after a meeting of its board of directors this afternoon.

A spokesman said the company will remain tight-lipped about how it expects to cope with the fall in demand and rise in costs caused by the attacks in the US earlier this month.

The move means 6,000 of the airline’s employees will have to wait at least another day before they are told if their jobs are safe or not.

In the days after the September 11th atrocities, Aer Lingus announced plans to scale back operations by 25%.

No exact figure for job losses has been revealed yet.

Although few details of today’s meeting were revealed, what is known is that the management team gave a full-briefing on the current state of affairs to the board of directors.

These directors are expected to give Public Enterprise Minister Mary O’Rourke a further briefing before she travels to Brussels on Monday.

The minister plans to lobby the European Commission to drop its ban on governments providing funding for airlines. Such a move currently contravenes EU competition law.
