New £20m bridge to be built over Liffey

Dublin is to get a new £20m bridge spanning the River Liffey.

The go-ahead has been given for a rotating bridge which will cross the river between Macken St and Guild St.

Stretching 120 metres from quay to quay the new two-lane bridge is intended to facilitate the ongoing developments in Dublin’s docklands.

An Bord Pleanala has given the green light to the project after considering a number of submissions and an Environmental Impact Report.

It will have a two-span cable structure and will be able to rotate in order to allow continued access into the upper reaches of Dublin Port.

Construction is due to begin in the middle of next year and it’s hoped traffic will be using the new bridge by 2004.

In addition to two lanes for traffic, there will also be pedestrian walkways and cycleways on the structure.
