The Government was tonight poised to suspend the Northern Ireland Assembly amid heightening fears the peace process is doomed.

With no sign of the IRA meeting Ulster Unionist demands to disarm, and Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams claiming the institutions are close to collapse, Ulster Secretary John Reid looked set to put the powersharing executive and institutions on hold.
