A row is brewing between Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats over the timing of a referendum on the emotive issue of abortion.

Earlier today, the Tanaiste, Mary Harney, said a referendum this autumn would be 'bitter, divisive and damaging' and called for a full and open debate on abortion before any poll is called.
