Trimble's leadership may be challenged
The Ulster Unionist leader, David Trimble could be set to face a challenge to his leadership following the heavy losses his party suffered in yesterday’s general election.
Sources within the party say that a bid to oust Mr Trimble may come before the end of the month at the party’s AGM.
Mr Trimble must seek re-election as the leader at the meeting and will have to convince members that the poor performance in the election can be overcome under his leadership.
One of the possible candidates for the leadership is the Reverend Martyn Smyth, who retained his seat in South Belfast and led a challenge against Mr Trimble last year.
Much of Mr Trimble's future will hang on the UUP's performance in the local council elections that were held at the same time but the results of which have not yet been tallied.
