New litter wardens for Dublin

The number of litter wardens on the streets of Dublin is to increase as part of the biggest ever push to clean up the capital.

The number of wardens will increase from 20 to 32. Last year £300,000 in fines were collected from those who littered the city.

As part of the new crack-down 2,000 extra bins will also be installed and a new junk collection service will be launched for households that want to dispose of items such as sofas and washing machines.

Lord Mayor Maurice Ahern says everyone has to play their part as Dublin Corporation will be unable to deal with the rubbish if the half a million people that enter the city centre each day continue to litter.

He has revealed that the annual bill for cleaning up the city currently runs to £16m.

Members of the public are also being asked to whistle blow on graffiti and the dumping of derelict cars.
