Bombing justice group seeking wider-ranging inquiry

Today marks the 27th anniversary of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, when - on May 17 1974 - 33 people died and hundreds more were injured and maimed in the attacks on Dublin and Monaghan pubs.

A report into the bombings is due to be completed by September.

The group representing families of the victims of the bombing is expressing concern that the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice will have the necessary powers to fully consider the Barron Report into the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

Justice for the Forgotten says in light of questions raised concerning the power and authority of the Justice Committee to inquire into the death of John Carthy in Abbeylara, the body probing the 1974 bombings should have every necessary poweer and privilege to fully consider the Barron Report.

Today's anniversary is being marked by wreath-laying ceremonies at North Street in Monaghan and Dublin's Talbot Street.

A commemorative Mass is being celebrated today at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral in Dublin.
