Moriarty to resume sittings today

The Moriarty Tribunal resumes public sittings this morning after a four-week recess during which the inquiry team has been interviewing Charles Haughey behind closed doors. Mr Justice Moriarty has yet to decide when the content of these interviews will be read into the public record.

The tribunal will also examine over the coming weeks the £1m settlement with the Revenue Commissioners that the former Taoiseach successfully fought and had scrapped.

The settlement originally arose out of evidence in the McCracken tribunal that Mr Haughey had received £1.3m from ex-Dunnes Stores owner Ben Dunne. Mr Haughey took the assessment to the Appeal Commissioners and his advisors argued successfully that the Revenue case was fundamentally flawed. The assessment was then reduced to zero.
