Appeal for people to drive sensibly after women die in Donegal car crash

Two women, including a mother of three boys, died in a car crash in Co Donegal yesterday.

The incident happened around 4.30pm on Glenfin Rd, Ballybofey. The women died after the car in which they were travelling, a blue Citreon C3, left the road in the townland of Camish. No other car was involved.

The women were named locally as Ciara Baird, 19, and Maria Wallace, 38.

A third person in the car, a male, was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Inspector Michael Harrison, head of the Donegal Traffic Corps, appealed to people to obey the rules of the road and drive sensibly.

“Once again we have carnage on Donegal’s roads and we would appeal to anybody who may have witnessed this particular accident to come forward and speak to gardaí in Letterkenny,” he said.

Fr John Joe Duffy, of St Mary’s Church in Stranorlar, said the thoughts and prayers were with all those in the latest crash and anyone who has lost a loved one on the road.

The latest incident came on the day of the pan-Europe Project Edward, the brainchild of European Traffic Police Network, which aimed to promote safety in the hope that, for one day at least, nobody would die on the continent’s roads. To date, 136 people have died in crashes in Ireland this year.
