The companies are Lismore Food Company; Wexford Home Preserves; Crossogue Preserves Ltd (Thurles); James Whelan Butchers (two awards) Clonmel; Kepak (Watergrasshill, Cork); Aldi (Naas); Green Pastures Donegal (Lifford); Durrus Cheese (Bantry); the Tipperary Kitchen (Thurles); Dunnes Stores (South Gt George’s St, Dublin 2); Doodle & Do Ltd (Blackpool, Cork); the Foods of Athenry (Oldcastle); and Nobo Ltd (Rathmines).
The contest attracted more than 10,000 entries globally for what is deemed the Oscars of the food world. A three-star rating is described as “Exquisite. Wow!”
More than 100 Irish companies received two-star recognition, while over 300 were given one star.
A group of 400 chefs, restaurateurs, food writers, and other trade exponents sampled the entries between March and July. Judging predominantly occurred at Guild HQ, Dorset, but judges also travelled to Tipperary as guests of Tipperary Food Producers and in Belfast courtesy of Invest NI.
For small, biscuit-making Lismore Food Company making its inaugural entry, the top accolade for its Caraway with Irish Seaweed fine biscuit marks another chapter in a meteoric rise. Earlier this year the company’s produce was accepted into Harrod’s, while last week it added Fortnum & Mason to its client base.
The company produces seven flavours of luxury biscuits, retailing at €6.50 per packet. The Caraway Irish Seaweed uses wakame seaweed sourced from Wild Irish Sea Veg, in the Burren, North Clare.
The top 50 foods from this year’s Great Taste awards will be announced at London’s Golden Forks awards in September, along with the industry’s supreme champion.
