Another case of measles confirmed in Galway

A new measles case, unrelated to an outbreak that occurred between April and July, has been confirmed.

The new case has come from another European country — the infected person travelled on a flight to Dublin on July 18. The person was infectious when flying but did not know it and, after arriving in Ireland, used private transport to travel to Galway.

The person was diagnosed in Galway and laboratory testing confirmed measles, which is a notifiable disease.

The HPSC has contacted the airline used by the person with measles and asked that all passengers be informed of their possible exposure to measles.

The recently reported outbreak resulted in 34 confirmed measles cases between April and mid-July.

Dr Kevin Kelleher, a consultant in public health, said measles are highly infectious but noted that people who were fully vaccinated are normally protected.
