The Gardaí have issued an appeal for people to take responsibility for their own behaviour with the Bank Holiday weekend coming up and have urged the public not to drink and drive.

There has been seven 24 hour period targeted operations over the high-risk periods of July and August focusing on high-risk locations associated with drink driving.

It has seen 543 drivers arrested on suspicion drink driving since July 1 - up 17% on this time last year.

Yesterday, figures from the Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority showed there has been an 8% increase in the number of road deaths so far this year, with 93 people having died as a result of crashes.
