Man accused of arson remanded in custody
Detective Garda Jim Bugler arrested 21-year-old Paul O’Donovan at 10am on Saturday morning at his home at 33 Woodview, Pinecroft, Grange, Cork.
The accused was charged with two counts. The first stated that on July 10, he entered a house at Melbourne Court, Bishopstown, Cork, with intent to cause criminal damage by arson. The second count was one of arson where he allegedly caused criminal damage to a shed and contents at the rear of the house.
Insp Adrian Gamble said the prosecution was opposed to bail being granted.
Det Garda Bugler said his concern was about the seriousness of the offence and that the accused would commit further serious offences if released on bail.
It was alleged that on the Saturday night/Sunday morning July 9/10, Mr O’Donovan broke into the house at Melbourne Court and tried to set fire to curtains.
Det Garda Bugler said at Cork District Court that it was alleged that the defendant left when two people returned to the house and that he then went to the back of the property and set fire to the shed.
Frank Buttimer, solicitor, withdrew the application for bail and said it was appropriate that the accused be remanded in custody and given medical and psychiatric attention. Judge Leo Malone remanded him in custody. Mr O’Donovan is to appear in Cork District Court by video link from prison on Thursday.
