Bronze and Iron Age travelling exhibition opens tomorrow in the Ballyhoura Hills

The exhibition, which outlines archaeological research in Ballyhoura, will open at Kilmallock Library, Co Limerick and will later move to Doneraile, Co Cork and Kilfinane, Co Limerick.

It will focus primarily on Bronze Age farmers, Iron Age frontiers, and medieval friars, reflecting research projects carried out in the area by the Discovery Programme’s Centre for Archaeology and Innovation.

This exhibition, entitled ‘Farmers, Friars and Frontiers: The Archaeology of the Ballyhoura Hills’, aims to communicate the results of this research in an accessible manner. It will remain on display in Kilmallock Library until July 29, then transfer to the tearooms at Doneraile Wildlife Park, where it will be on display until August 15.

Finally, it will move to Kilfinane Library, where it will be on display between August 16 and 30. As the aim of the exhibition is to create local awareness of the region’s archaeological heritage and the Discovery Programme’s research, venues that local people visit regularly were chosen.

The Discovery Programme’s Centre for Archaeology and Innovation is celebrating its 25th anniversary. This initiative links with the Discovery Programme’s strategy of enabling people to become custodians of their own landscapes and of creating a community of scholars to interpret these landscapes.

The Ballyhoura Hills project was one of the first undertaken by the programme and aimed to identify new archaeological sites of Bronze and Iron Age date.
