IRELAND

Voting on the election of a Taoiseach in the new Dáil has taken place. Enda Kenny gets 57 votes, the exact amount of Fine Gael and Labour TDs, for Taoiseach. There are 94 votes against him. Only five TDs abstained. It will mean he will have to submit his resignation to the President, but continue in a caretaker capacity. Micheál Martin got 43 votes for Taoiseach, and 108 votes against.

Fianna Fáil TD Sean O Fearghail has been elected to become the new Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil. He is the first Ceann Comhairle to be elected by secret ballot.

A leading Fianna Fáil TD has brushed off an incident with a water protester outside the Dáil this afternoon which saw a man grab him by the tie and throw a punch at him.

Banks are seizing more than three homes every day across Ireland, latest figures reveal.

Luas drivers are to stage two further 48-hour strikes next month. The drivers say they will strike again on the April 2, 3, 23 and 24. Earlier today, emergency services dealt with a crash involving a Luas tram and a car. The incident occured just before 2pm this afternoon on Belgard, in Tallaght, on the Red Line.
