VIDEO: Martin living the life online as creator is named Cork Person of the Month

For the very first time the winner of a Cork Person of the Month award has been given to someone who wishes to remain anonymous. But his work is known to multitudes.

The man behind the YouTube sensation Martin’s Life , a cartoon which focuses on comical misunderstandings between Martin and his Cork parents, has just been named January Cork Person of the Month.

To mark the occasion a hilarious new Martin’s Life video has been created to celebrate the event.

All that is known about the creator is that he’s a young man from North Cork and he’s being given the award for his comedic and socially aware talents.

“The creator of Martin’s Life would like to keep his anonymity and we very much respect that request,” said awards organiser Manus O’Callaghan. “So his creation Martin [a cardboard cutout] accepted the award on his behalf.”

“I feel there is nothing to be gained from being known, and am just happy that people enjoy the videos,” said the creator.

Martin’s Life is a series of minute-long cartoons based on typical conversations between Martin and his parents.

It is a ‘generation gap’ conversation with which many teenagers and young adults from anywhere in the world will empathise.

These hilarious YouTube cartoons cover such subjects as ‘Christmas’, ‘Skyping the Sister’, ‘The Referendum, ‘Skinny Jeans’, ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘It’s a Small World’, ‘ESB Advert’ — and now ‘Cork Person of the Month’.

“This award celebrates the creativity of the young man from Co Cork and his work which has promoted the wit and charm of Cork to a national and international audience, receiving millions of hits on YouTube for Martin’s Cork family,” said Mr O’Callaghan.

“A few years ago, we acknowledged the ongoing success of the Sminky Shorts cartoons and now Martin’s Life is another internet success which was recently screened at both New York University and the University of Southern California as part of the Irish Screen American Festival.”

A very special Martin’s Life cartoon has been created, showing Martin’s family’s reaction to his award, and is available on irishexaminer.com.

The creator of Martin’s Life will now go forward for possible selection as Cork Person of the Year at a gala awards lunch next January, at the Rochestown Park Hotel, before an invited audience of 250 people representing all sectors of Cork society.
