IRELAND

The High Court has today made a €2m judgement against Independent TD Mick Wallace. The Ulster Bank loan, which was granted in 2009, was assigned to an Irish subsidiary of US investment firm Cerberus.

Gardai have briefed the partner of a father of two who has been missing for over a month after a man’s body was recovered from a slurry pit last night close to where he was last seen.

Online learning company Shaw Academy has today announced 40 new jobs. The new positions are on top of 60 jobs created by the company based in Dublin's Eastpoint Business Park in recent months.

The director of the Irish Tropical Medical Bureau has said that he is sure he has treated a case of the Zika virus in Ireland. He also said however that there is little danger of the virus spreading here.

Primary school principals say they are increasingly concerned about their pupils' mental health. Taoiseach Enda Kenny is due to address the Irish Primary Principals Network conference on emotional well-being this afternoon.

Concerns have been raised about the awarding of a €50m contract to run Irish Water’s call centre. Meanwhile, Minister for Education Jan O'Sullivan has today played down the anti-water-charges campaign. "I think people recognise that we did address...people's fear of the high cost," she said.

There is some good news on the weather front. The two weather warnings have now passed and Met Éireann forecaster Deirdre Lowe said conditions should improve this afternoon. “Storm Gertrude has moved quickly away, it’s now to the west of Scandinavia,” she said.

WORLD 

British and US intelligence cracked the codes of Israeli drones operating in the Middle East and monitored their surveillance feeds for almost 20 years, according to documents leaked by American whistleblower Edward Snowden.

An FBI video of the fatal shooting of a spokesman for armed occupiers of an Oregon wildlife refuge has shown the man reaching into his jacket before falling into the snow.

SPORT

Munster rugby have announced that Billy Holland has signed a new two-year contract that will see him remain at the province until at least June 2018. It follows the news earlier this week that stalwarts Keith Earls and Conor Murray had committed to the Red men for at least the next three years.

Eamonn Fitzmaurice has challenged growing assertions that the demands placed on inter-county footballers are both unreasonable and unsustainable. The argument that the excessive commitment required in order to survive at inter-county level is fast reaching a head has gathered pace this month, following the decisions of Dublin’s Rory O’Carroll and Armagh’s Jamie Clarke to sit out the 2016 season.

BUSINESS

Joe Duffy’s media firm’s cash pile has doubled to nearly €420,000 last year. Claddaghgreen Ltd, owned by the RTE star, lodged figures with the Companies Office showing a significant increase from €214,025 to €419,068.

The Dalata Hotel Group has continued its expansion drive by spending €40m on acquiring operatorship status in four hotels.
