Garda chief: People know who killed Adrian Donohoe
Speaking on the third anniversary of the 41-year-old’s murder outside Lordship Credit Union in Co Louth, the police boss said there were people out there who knew “who the killers are”.
The father-of-two was shot dead by a criminal gang during a botched robbery on the evening of January 25, 2013.
The death of the popular Cavan man left his wife, Caroline, a widow and their two young children, Amy and Niall, without their father.
The cross-border gang-of-five was quickly identified, but, despite a major garda investigation, no one has been arrested in direct relation to the murder.
Many of the gang are from the north. One is still thought to be in the US, while others returned home after initially fleeing abroad.
“It is three years now since detective garda Adrian Donohoe was brutally and senselessly murdered in the line of duty,” said commissioner O’Sullivan.
“The impact of Adrian’s death is still keenly felt in Dundalk, amongst the garda family, and the wider community.
“Most of all, our thoughts are with Caroline, the children, and all of Adrian’s family and friends.”
She said Det Donohoe was the “very embodiment” of dedication to the community and was integral to Dundalk Garda Station, St Patrick’s GAA in Lordship, and to the underage teams he coached.
She said the hunt for his killers would continue: “An Garda Síochána is committed to ensuring Adrian’s killers are brought to justice and extensive assistance is being provided by law enforcement colleagues, including the PSNI.”
She appealed to anyone with information to come forward: “The smallest piece of information could be significant.”
She asked those with specific information about the gang to come clean: “There are still people out there who know who the killers are. It is never too late to do the right thing.
“Any information provided would be treated sensitively.”
