VIDEO: Celebrating Human Rights Day 2015
This Declaration of Human Rights came about over 50 years ago.
To commemorate the day on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10 each year.
This year's Human Rights Day is dedicated to the launch of a year-long campaign for the 50th anniversary of the two International Covenants on Human Rights: the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 16 December 1966.

In the aftermath of WWII, the two Covenants along with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights became the International Bill of Human Rights and set out the civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights which were created and are the birthright of all human beings.

Fifty years on, many people are still unaware of the existence of the International Bill of Human Rights.
To promote and raise awareness of the two Covenants, the UN Human Rights Office has launched, today, on Human Rights Day, “Our Rights. Our Freedoms. Always." This is a year-long campaign to emphasise the basic and instinctive rights of global citizens now and always.

“On Human Rights Day, let us recommit to guaranteeing the fundamental freedoms and protecting the human rights of all,” said United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, in a statement on the Human Rights Day website.
The year-long campaign supports the theme of rights and freedoms. The freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear, which make the International Bill of Human Rights as relevant today as they were 50 years ago.
