Loud bangs, believed to be a firearms discharge, were heard on the Gallowgate in Glasgow at around 9.50pm while the Wolfe Tones were performing at the Barrowland Ballroom.

Police Scotland said the popular city nightspot was busy with Saturday night patrons.

However, they said they have not received reports of any injuries.

Police were approached by members of the public who had heard the loud bangs at the junction of Gibson Street, right outside the concert venue.

The Wolfe Tones are popular among Scotland’s close-knit Irish community.

Detective Inspector Gillian Patrick, from London Road police office, said they were appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

“Inquiries are under way to establish the circumstances surrounding last night’s events,” she said.

“Officers, including specialised search and forensic teams remain in the area to speak to local residents and businesses.

“There was a concert in the Barrowlands last night, and the Gallowgate was busy with revellers enjoying a Saturday night out.

It is possible that other members of the public may have heard something just before 10pm.”

A half-mile police cordon remained in place on the Gallowgate into last evening as police continued their investigations.

Specialist search and forensics teams were on the scene, a police spokesman said.
