A retired teacher, aged 73, has pleaded not guilty at Limerick Circuit Court to 78 charges of indecently assaulting 13 boys at a primary school on dates between September 1978 and June 1981.
The trial has already been told by a number of former pupils of ongoing sexual abuse they were subjected to by the accused.
In evidence yesterday, another former student said he vividly remembered his time when taught by the accused and their interaction in class. The accused also prepared the class for Confirmation. The accused, he said, abused him once or twice a week by placing his hand inside his clothes, touching his genital area and penis.
Abuse occurred on other occasions during PE classes which were supervised by the accused.
Cross-examined by Andrew Sexton, defending, the witness said he had issued civil proceedings for compensation against the accused. He agreed in these proceedings that he did not divulge he had been involved in the sexual abuse of a young girl over a period of years.
The witness said this abuse, for which he had been jailed, had been a consequence of his abuse at the hands of the accused. He said: “It was a contributory factor; it was the biggest contributory factor.”
The witness said he did not mention this at the time he issued the civil proceedings as he had not come to terms with what he had done to his victim at that time.
Another victim, now aged 46, said he was abused on an almost daily basis by the accused, who would put his hand inside his trousers at front or back and fondle his penis or bottom.
He never made a complaint to the gardaí, as he tried to forget what happened. “I had squirrelled it away in the back of my head.”
He made a statement after being contacted by gardaí.
The trial continues.
