IRELAND

Apple is to create 1,000 new jobs at its European headquarters on the northside of Cork city. The announcement was made this morning as Apple chief executive, Tim Cook arrived in Ireland.

The Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan has said she is not aware that people can hire a gun for €200 in Dublin. Commissioner O’Sullivan was taking questions from TDs and Senators at the Justice Committee this afternoon.

Mountjoy Prison has been locked down after the discovery of a firearm and ammunition, it is being reported. The discovery was made in a service area around lunchtime, in an area of the prison where inmates would not usually be, according to the Prison Service.

WORLD

Several pupils have been taken to hospital after collapsing at a secondary school in England. Around 27 students displayed signs of sickness and feeling faint at Outwood Academy School in Ripon, North Yorkshire Police said.

Nathan Matthews has been found guilty of murdering his stepsister Becky Watts following a trial at Bristol Crown Court in England. His girlfriend, Shauna Hoare, has been acquitted of the charge but found guilty of manslaughter.
