IRELAND

Full rail services will operate this morning, after more than 18 hours of negotiations to resolve a dispute at Irish Rail. Industrial action was called off when talks finished up at the Workplace Relations Commission just before 4am this morning.

The coalition is to stop landlords from raising rents every year and will limit rises to once every two years. After a climbdown by Environment Minister Alan Kelly to link rent rises to inflation, Fine Gael and Labour agreed on the plan last night.

At least 50 arrests have been made and three police officers were injured during an anti-capitalist protest in central London last night. Holidaymakers in Sharm el-Sheikh will be flown home today, but passengers will only be allowed hand luggage. Planes are banned from carrying bags in the hold, amid fears that a bomb brought down the Russian Metrojet plane in Egypt last week.

Toyota is investing $1bn (€920m) in a Silicon Valley research company to develop artificial intelligence and robotics. The move underlines the Japanese car maker’s determination to lead in futuristic vehicles that drive themselves and apply the technology to other areas of daily life.

China UnionPay, a state-owned payments processing- firm based in Shanghai, has emerged as a potential buyer for Galway-founded financial services firm Fintrax. Fintrax was founded in Ballinahown, Co Galway, in the early 1980s. It provides via subsidiary firms Vat- refund services for tourists buying goods overseas and currency conversion technology to allow for credit card purchases to be made in the buyer’s home currency when abroad.
