Experts say the ash and smoke rose 2,500 metres above the volcano’s crater. According to Mexico’s National Centre for Disaster Prevention, there were more than 40 exhalations reported.

This most recent activity comes after a series of rumblings at the massive volcano over recent months.

There are more than 3,000 volcanoes in Mexico although just 14 are considered active.

Popocatepetl is Mexico’s most active volcano and reaches across three states. It is the country’s second highest peak, reaching more than 5,500 metres.
