Scooby sniffs €400k cocaine at airport
The canine identified baggage, being carried by an Italian national, who had arrived on a flight at Dublin Airport from Dubai on Sunday afternoon.
When Customs staff conducted a search they found 5.7kg of cocaine in the bag with an estimated street value of around €400,000.
The 48-year-old suspect arrested by gardaí is due to appear before the court.
It was one of a number of operations at Dublin Airport at the weekend which were the result of intelligence gathering by Customs.
On Saturday, officers at the airport seized more than 41,000 cigarettes with a retail value of €20,600.
The discovery was made when they stopped two Polish males who had arrived on a flight from Warsaw.
The previous day, staff confiscated €10,120 in cash from a man who was about to board a flight to Poland.
Officers detained the cash in accordance with the Proceeds of Crime Act.
The District Court granted a three-month detention order to facilitate further investigations.
It follows two major cash seizures in the last fortnight. On September 16, Customs officers took possession of €261,000 in cash from four Irish residents who arrived off a flight from the United Arab Emirates.
On September 11, officers seized over €500,000 in cash, the largest haul this year.
It had been taken from a 36-year-old Irish male travelling to Brussels.
