Cork family fun day at Tramore Valley Park gets go-ahead

A charity fun day in Cork city’s newest public park is set to go ahead this weekend after technical insurance issues were overcome.

The insurance hitch forced the last-minute postponement of the event at Tramore Valley Park during the summer which was hoped to showcase the potential of the new amenity.

However, city officials confirmed last night the issues have been resolved, and the event will now take place on Sunday.

It will be the first major public event staged in the park — the site of the city’s former landfill — which has undergone a €40m decontamination and remediation process in recent years.

The original event had to be cancelled just two days before it was due to take place last June when minor technical insurance issues prevented the granting of an event licence for an event of more than 5,000 people.

It is understood the issues could have been resolved if organisers had two or three more days to organise the required paperwork, but they just ran out of time.

Senior city council engineer Michael O’Brien said while Sunday’s event did not require an event licence, the event will be fully insured, and the required health and safety arrangements will be in place.

“The event will showcase for the first time the huge potential of the massive public park at Black Ash,” he said.

Events including funfair attractions, a display of vintage and electric cars, falconry displays, BMX and cross-country biking demonstrations, and food stalls, will take place on a recently developed multi-use events space which can host circuses or outdoor concerts.

The park’s BMX track, which is due to open to the public later this year, will also be showcased.

The event, which runs from 11am to 5pm, is being organised by Bishopstown and District Lions Club in association with Cork City Council, to raise funds for the Cork Penny Dinners and other Lions Club charities.

Free parking will be provided on site and the All Ireland hurling final will be broadcast on a big screen.
